For international visitors, the biggest challenge is rarely the distance itself. It is usually the practical layer of everyday life: how to contact people, how to pay, how to get around, how to order food, and how to find reliable local services quickly. The right apps help close that gap.
Communication, Payment & Shopping
1. Multipurpose App: WeChat WeChat is the first app most visitors need to download. It is used for messaging, voice and video calls, QR code scanning, payments, and many other everyday tasks. Think of it as several apps in one — it becomes a central part of daily life in China. 2. Payment: WeChat Pay and Alipay WeChat Pay and Alipay are the two major digital payment methods in China. By scanning a QR code, you can pay for practically everything from coffee to clothing. Both apps are widely used and important to have for everyday purchases. 3. Shopping: Taobao, JD, and Pinduoduo These three apps are the main online marketplaces in China: - Taobao — A huge marketplace with a very wide range of products, from clothing and electronics to unique and niche items - JD — A strong option for faster delivery and a good choice for mainstream products and electronics - Pinduoduo — A discount-focused marketplace where prices can be surprisingly low, especially for group-buying or promotion-driven purchases
Translation, Navigation & Transport
4. Translation: Youdao Translate and Baidu Translate Language can be a barrier, especially when app menus, food options, or local signs appear only in Chinese. - Youdao Translate — supports text, voice, and camera translation; helpful for reading signs, menus, or app instructions - Baidu Translate — useful for text, voice, and photo translation, especially for translating screenshots or app content quickly 5. Navigation: Amap and Baidu Maps Good navigation matters because addresses in China are often easier to use when searched directly in a map app. - Amap (Gaode Maps) — route planning by public transport, walking, or bike with real-time traffic information - Baidu Maps — GPS navigation, traffic updates, and turn-by-turn guidance for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians 6. Car-hailing: DiDi Chuxing DiDi is the Chinese equivalent of Uber and one of the most useful ride-hailing apps for visitors. It offers taxis and private cars, and is often the simplest way to get around when public transport is less convenient.
Travel, Food Delivery & Restaurant Reviews
7. Travel: Ctrip and Railway 12306 - Ctrip — useful for booking flights, hotels, and trains in one place - Railway 12306 — the official train ticket booking platform in China; especially important for travel between cities 8. Food Delivery: Meituan and Ele.me Meituan and Ele.me are two of the biggest food delivery apps in China. They make it easy to order meals, snacks, and in some cases even daily items directly to your door — very convenient when staying in a hotel or apartment. 9. Restaurant Reviews: Dazhong Dianping Dazhong Dianping is one of the most useful apps for checking restaurant reviews, nearby food options, and local recommendations. It is also helpful for finding cinemas, spas, gyms, and other services. Once you are comfortable using translation tools, it becomes a very practical way to compare options before going out.
Summary
The most useful apps in China are the ones that make communication, payment, shopping, translation, navigation, transport, travel booking, food delivery, and restaurant discovery easier. International visitors do not need to install everything at once — a few well-chosen apps can already make a trip far more comfortable and efficient.
